Media Paper 2 PPE: Learner's response

Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

  • WWW: This is superb: a joy to read! An A* in a mock exam is a rare thing and we need to guard against complacency but your engagement with media debates is simply degree-level standard.
  • EBI: In Q4, knowledge of some of the companies/distributors may have given your answer a little more authority and I found the conclusion a little confusing with the slight jump to the 2010s political climate.
Did you succeed in meeting or exceeding your target grade for A Level Media in this paper? If not, how many additional marks do you need to achieve your target grade in Paper 2?

  • I exceeded my target grade of a B by 2 grades.
Write a question-by-question analysis of your performance. For each question, write how many marks you got from the number available and identify any points that you missed by carefully studying the AQA indicative content in the mark scheme:

  • Q1 - 9/9 - Mental Health
  • Q2 - 23/25 - Audience appeal of both 'The Sims' and 'Lara Croft' with complex analysis of how they are constructed and therefore could be used to portray the audiences own ideologies rather than influence them.
  • Q3 - 22/25 - Production, and also consider the role of producers and their goals as well as the consequences and alternatives
  • Q4 - 22/25 - Industry - How the digital age and introduction of digital distribution impacts production companies and content of shows rather than how they've adapted in isolation.
Look at question 4 - the synoptic question on TV. Write a full, new essay plan for this question.

  • INTRO: TELEVISION ADAPTS ITS CONTENT AND DISTRIBUTION PROCESSES IN ORDER TO APPEAL TO A GLOBAL AUDIENCE. HOWEVER, THE SUCCESS IS DEPENDENT ON NUMEROUS EXTERNAL FACTORS AS SEEN THROUGH BBC DRAMA 'CAPITAL' AND GLOBAL PHENOMENON 'DEUTSCHLAND 83'
  • PARAGRAPH 1:
- CAPITAL
- state of the nation drama - reflects british life
-netflix - appeal to global audience
- relative success however bbc itself has had success in other shows
-similar to teen vogue; USA but global appeal
- cultural industries
- fandom
FISKE - AUDIENCE POWER [POP CULTURE MADE BY PEOPLE NOT CULTURAL INDUSTRIES] - applies to D83/TV too
  • PARAGRAPH 2:
- D83
- domestically didn't do well- did well in america
- different distribution techniques
-ideologies; western
- postmodernism theory
- fandom
- Freemantle = british, RTL = american/german
  • CONC: REITERATE INTRO POINT, LINK TO SOCIAL CONTEXTS
Based on the whole of your Paper 2 learner response, plan FIVE topics / concepts / CSPs / theories that you will prioritise in your Easter Media revision timetable.

  • Production Companies
  • Industry Contexts for Television
  • Fiske, Hesmondhalgh and Industry theories
  • Metroid and Representations
  • Digitalm Age

Statement of Intent: January feedback and LR

Mark: 10

Grade: A*

Comments on Statement of Intent:

·         This is a stunning Statement of Intent that easily exceeds A Level standards. The level of thought behind the concept is truly outstanding and worthy of the very top of level 5.
·         The only possible issue could be word count – I’ll get a second opinion from Mr Bush. If you did need to cut it, I’d say a couple of the media language bullet points could go or perhaps some of the audience and industry section. One to perhaps look at a final time but this is just brilliant.
